Carnival Calabar and Miss Africa shine at South Africa week Lagos 2023

It was a weeklong of activities from the 22nd of April to 29th April as the South African consulate in Lagos hosted the maiden edition of South Africa week Lagos 2023.

The opening ceremony took place at the exquisite terraform bar and restaurant in Lekki, Lagos that had notable personalities from both the public and private sector in attendance. In the Consular General Dr Bobby Moroe’s opening remarks he reiterated the cordial relationship Nigeria has enjoyed with South Africa for so many years and is committed to foster and strengthen ties with both countries.

The Cross River State contingent led by Mr. Thomas Ikpeme, Special adviser, Events and Tourism Governor’s office, Mathias Amgbah, Former Deputy Governorship candidate, The reigning Miss Africa Queen Precious Okoye, Prince Femi Oyelade, Brand consultant Miss Africa Production were on ground to explore South Africa in Lagos with the wonderful performances and cuisine at the event.

Day 2 of the South Africa week was a night with the stars, an event that had a documentary review and a panel discussion hosted by AY the comedian and attended by top actors and celebrities in the movie industry. It was also a networking opportunity with industry stakeholders and the private sector on exploiting and taking advantage of opportunities for the future.

Also during the weeklong celebration the South Africa Nigeria business roundtable event was held with the business community coming together to have a panel discussion on the challenges and solutions to a smooth business relationship between South Africa and Nigeria. The business roundtable was sponsored by Access bank plc. represented by the group head corporate communications Mr Amechi Okobi.

The climax of the South Africa week Lagos was the Freedom Day celebration which had a breathtaking and explosive performance by the Carnival Calabar revelers. On ground to coordinate was the Executive Secretary Carnival Commission, The Cross River State House of Assembly member elect, Hon. Stanley Nsemo and Special Adviser Carnival Effiong Ekpenyong.

In his remarks the Consul General Dr Bobby Moroe said that the carnival performance was out of this world and thanked the Cross River contingent for gracefully honoring the event and is looking forward to working with the Governor Elect of Cross River State, His Excellency Prince Edet Basset Otu who will be sworn in on May 29th of May 2023.

The CG had already formerly hinted in his last visit to Calabar of South Africa’s intention to participate in the Carnival Calabar 2023 as a non-competing band.
