Neurite Mendes: My year of reign

Angolan beauty Neurite Mendes is getting ready to hand over the reigns to a new Queen as the road to Miss Africa 2017 Calabar 2017 intensifies.

We caught up with her to chat about her year of reign.

What do you now know about yourself that you did not know when you were crowned queen just over a year ago?

I wasn’t aware before being crowned Miss Africa is that I am quite a good motivational speaker – if I do say so myself . I guess it’s because I was placed at a platform where young ladies aspire to follow my footsteps, making me a comforting voice to many of them and thus had to learn how to tell the worst truths, in the most rational way.

What are your top highlight moments during your year of reign?

It would be almost unfair having to choose only a few top moments during my reign because every moment led to the next so I wouldn’t even know where to start. But, the vividness of the Calabar Carnaval definitely still plays in my head with the same intensity.

What would you like the next queen to never forget?

I would like her to never forget her priorities and her principals. Her priorities will help her get the job done and her principals will keep her out of trouble.

What for you makes the City of Calabar special?

To me, what makes the city of Calabar or better yet, Cross River State is the fact that it is home to the largest rain forest in Nigeria, has beautiful touristic sites like The Obudu Ranch Hotel and Resort, Tinapa Lakeside Hotel Resort and of course the amazing government initiative of creating the Cross River garment factory amongst many other sites. Furthermore, it is the fact that its weather and my skin are best friends as well as the contagious humour that is unique in each CrossRiverian.

What’s next from you?

The reign has ended but the job goes on. Not to be too specific on my upcoming projects because I have this fear of jinxing them when I’m too open, but I’m looking into completing my Honors in International Relations, I’m in the process of registering my NGO in my hometown and did I mention writing a book? Okey, that’s enough!

Before she steps into the next major phase of her life, Neurite Mendes will hand over the crown in a live event which’ll be broadcast on DSTV channel 198 and GOTV channel 29 on Wednesday 27 December 2017.
