Miss Africa 2017 Calabar contestants have been in Cross River State’s Calabar for bootcamp for almost two weeks now. The road to the live event on 27 December at Calabar International Convention Center is definitely heating up as the competition opens up for voting.
As part of getting them ready to compete in Africa’s only climate change themed beauty pageant, the 25 contestants have been subjected to a rigorous bootcamp which has included photoshoots, visits to nearby communities as well as attending some government initiated events.
Let the voting begin!
The competition now enters an exciting phase where supporters have the chance to show their love by voting for their favourite contestant. The organisers of the competition have endeavoured to present supporters with voting platforms that are as inclusive as possible; given the digital restrictions that the continent faces. Those that are in Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria are able to vote for any contestant via SMS while the rest of the continent can vote by downloading WeChat and following the official Miss Africa Calabar account.
Honoring the theme!
This year’s carnival is themed around Migration, an issue very close to His Excellency Governor of Cross River State Ben Ayade. This theme seeks to explore how people are being displaced by climate change. It has been noted that we are now at a particular historical moment, facing a new type of environmentally driven migration that will be more fast and furious. It will require incredible adaptability and political will to keep up with the changes that are forecasted to happen.
In light of this, the theme has been incorporated into Miss Africa 2017 Calabar and this comes through in the voting process as well.
Voting when in Nigeria
SMS keyword MIGRATION and country code to 35818. Make sure that the keyword ‘MIGRATION’ precedes any SMS you are sending as this’ll enable the vote to count.
